(03/18/2004)
West Virginia is cocked to spend $65 million on a new bridge across the Ohio River at Parkersburg, using Blennerhassett Island.

The bridge is part of the Appalachian Corridor D, which connects I-79 with Ohio running from Harrison County to the Ohio River in Parkersburg.

It's the single most expensive project the state has ever contracted, a total of $100 million.

Their is some controversy surrounding this bridge over its location and size. The tied arch bridge will span the Ohio River at the western end of historic Blennerhassett Island.

Environmentalists and historians were concerned over disruptions on the historic island.

The bridge will take two or three construction seasons to complete.
