LITERACY COUNCIL WILL TRAIN TUTORS - Volunteers Needed For Program

(03/19/2004)
The Calhoun Literacy Council will be holding tutor trainings March 26-27 according to instructor Shelly Allen.

The sessions get under way on Friday (March 26) at 5:30 at the Calhoun-Gilmer Career Center and will continue through Saturday afternoon.

"We hope to get a lot of people there," said Calhoun Literacy Coordinator Gaylen Duskey. "It's free. It's one weekend of your life. And it's for a good cause."

According to Allen, there are some trained tutors but very few are active. The purpose of the Calhoun Literacy Council is to help those who wanting to read read. The council also has some math tutoring and preparation for GED training.

Friday's session begins with registration and has sessions on the national literacy program and the local literacy program. There are also sessions on the background of illiteracy, sensitivity and speech sounds. Friday's session will close at about 8:15 p.m.

Saturday's session starts at 9 a.m. and ends at about 2:45 p.m. with evaluations and the presentation of certificates.
