VOTERS APPROVE EMERGENCY SERVICES LEVY - Nearly 84% For Measure, Low Voter Turnout

(03/07/2004)
Calhoun voters renewed the Emergency Services Levy for five years yesterday, with 83.73 percent of the voters in favor of the initiative.

The levy needed 60% or more in favor to pass.

Calhoun EMS Director Josh Johnson (left) said the county's ambulance service appreciates the support given in yesterdays election.

"We hope to continue providing service to the citizens," he said.

The county's three fire chiefs were delighted the proposal passed, indicating the money is used for the "nuts of bolts" of their everyday operations.

Five-hundred-and-twenty-five voted for the levy and 102 voted against, with all ten precincts reporting. It passed in all precincts.

Calhoun Clerk Richard Kirby said only 12.07 percent of the registered voters turned out, in what may be a record low turn-out for the county.

a record low in voter turn-out in the county

"We had some problems with poll workers blocked by high water, and there was an electrical outage yesterday morning at Pleasant Hill School," said Kirby. "To make matters worse, the school's fire alarm would not shut off."

High waters may have hindered some voters, with water out of banks along the Little Kanawha and the West Fork. Roads were blocked in the normal low-lying areas.

The smallest voter turn-out was at Orma with only 5% of the voters casting their ballots. Slightly over nine percent of eligible voters cast ballots at Minnora and Hur-Daniels Run.

The highest voter turn-out was at the Senior Center in Grantsville with almost 20 percent of the voters responding.

"We are grateful to county voters who came out and voted for
the levy," said EMT Mike Little, at the Mt. Zion Station

The last time the levy was up for a vote in 1997, it passed with 91.24% of the voters in favor. Turnout was considerably higher.

In earlier years the levy failed in some precincts, and one time failed throughout the county.

The five year levy gives financial support to Calhoun EMS, the county's three fire departments and money for one deputy sheriff.
