CALHOUN WOMAN HELD HOSTAGE - Clay Man Charged With Kidnapping And Assault

(02/11/2004)
A volatile hostage situation ended Monday night at a residence in rural southern Calhoun County.

A Clay County man has been charged with kidnapping, holding hostage and first degree sexual assault by Calhoun magistrate Rick Postalwait.

Investigating officer Deputy Ron Bandy brought the charges against Sean Andrew Thacker, 28, of Maysel, after an 18-hour investigation.

Thacker was already being held in Central Regional Jail on $50,000 cash bond related to a domestic battery charge following the Monday evening incident, which took place on Milo Road, about four miles from Minnora, State Route 16.

Court records said Thacker used "force, threats and duress" as he "confined or concealed" twenty-three-year-old Lisa Adkins to extort sex from her.

Thacker reportedly used a knife, ropes and other restraints on Adkins and her four-year-old daughter.

Thacker, who is married and has children in Clay County, employed what authorities described as a deadly weapon in the commission of his hostage taking. He had a previous history of a DUI.

Calhoun County Deputy Sheriff Ron Bandy and State Trooper Jeff Hunt responded to a 911 call at 6 p.m. Monday. Thacker fled the residence and was picked-up by Trooper Hunt while going down a rural road.

Authorities said Adkins and her daughter did not receive serious physical injuries during the hostage taking.

Thacker is charged with two counts of kidnapping or holding hostage, felonies which call for incarceration for life without eligibility for parole.

He is also charged with sexual assault in the first degree, which calls for imprisonment of not less than 15 years nor more than 35 years.

The suspect will be held in Central Regional Jail without bond until there is judicial review. Magistrates do not set bond in cases where punishment could be life in prison, according to Magistrate Rick Postalwait.
