Ethel B. Copen, 82 of Chestnut Run, Wirt County, died April 6, 2001, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital of Parkersburg. Mrs. Copen was born July 18, 1925 in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Walter L. Smith and Mary Smith Rupert. She was a life-long homemaker and a faithful member of the Calvary Apostolic Tabernacle and a member of the Wirt County Senior Citizens.

She is survived by 2 sons, Roy Hayes Copen and Lloyd Copen both of Elizabeth, WV; 4 daughters, Mary Enoch of Elizabeth, Betty Winans of Newark, WV, Gladys Fordyce of of Mineral Wells, WV, and Peggy Hendrickson of Fairbanks, Alaska; 2 brothers, Basil Smith of Stillwater, Ohio, and Dale Smith of Dotha, Alabama; 2 sisters, Eula Reynolds of of New Philadelphia, Ohio, and Rita Smith of Stillwater; 19 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Burton Copen in 1995; a son, Robert Copen; 2 daughters Mabel and Carolyn Copen; a sister, Ester Cunningham; 6 brothers, Homer, Okey, Oaoatha, Denver, Walter and Hays Smith; 2 half brothers, Lovell and Ernest Smith; 2 half sisters, Gladys Cain and Ruth Perkins; 5 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held Monday at Owl Hill United Methodist Church, Chestnut Run, Wirt County. Rev. Tim Hopkins will officiate. Burial will follow in the Owl Hill Cemetery. Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the Busch Funeral Home of Elizabeth and one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.
