SPENCER VENEER CITED IN ROGERS DEATH - $5000 Proposed Penalty For "Serious" Problem

(04/07/2001)
A Spencer manufacturing plant has been issued a citation and may be fined $5000 related to the death of a former Calhoun resident Charles Clinton Rogers, 44. The U. S. Department of Labor (OSHA) claims Rogers fell 9 1/2 feet at Spencer Veneer because a deck did not have railings.

The accident happened on February 10, 2001. The report indicates there were problems with a log deck at the saw mill. The deck on which the workers stand to straighten logs did not have railings on all open sides, which exposed the employees to a fall.

The citation says the violation is serious and gave the company until March 26 to correct the problem. The Company was also cited for other less serious alleged violations, with no fines proposed. Spencer Veneer has until April 11 to contest the citations.
