TWENTY-ONE MEN ARRESTED AT COCK FIGHT

(02/04/2004)
Those of you who believe cockfighting was a curious and nefarious bloodletting over quickly placed bets in the hollers of West Virginia, now long gone.

You're wrong!

At least 21 men were arrested Sunday at Birch River for alleged cockfighting.

Conservation officers and Nicholas County law enforcement seized 17 fighting roosters in a raid in the mountain stream community.

Cock fighting equipment was also taken by the officers for evidence.

One of the participates, who was changing his pants when officers arrived, fled to the Nicholas County woods for several hours, barefoot in the snow before he was "captured."

The surviving roosters were taken to the Nicholas County Animal Shelter.

The participants were from Dille, Birch River, Sutton, Summersville and sundry other locations.
