DEPUTY BALLENGEE RELEASED AFTER ACCIDENT - Icy Roads Present Hazard

(01/26/2004)
Chief Deputy Sheriff Carl Ballengee was treated and released from Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center Sunday night after he received injuries when his police Jeep rolled-over on icy Rt. 16.

Sheriff Allen Parsons said there was concern regarding an injury to his eye, inflicted by an object during the roll-over.

Ballengee was traveling north on Rt. 16 near Orma, returning from weekend training in Charleston with a police dog the sheriff's department is obtaining.

A witness said Ballengee met a vehicle traveling south that was sliding out-of-control, and attempted to avoid a collision. His vehicle spun out-of-control on the slick road and rolled-over, said Sheriff Allen Parsons. He said the police Jeep is likely a total loss.

Calhoun EMS from the Minnora Station and the Upper West Fork VFD responded to the call.

Sheriff Parsons said Trooper J.D. Hunt is investigating.

The sheriff said Deputy Charlie Richards is reporting to the State Police Academy today for training.
