Emergency personnel bring victim up embankment after he is extracted

A driver was trapped in his vehicle early Wednesday morning after it went out of control on Euclid-Nicut Road, striking a tree head-on and almost plummeting into the freezing waters of a nearby stream.

Upper West Fork firemen and Calhoun EMS personnel worked for nearly an hour extracting a 25-year-old Shock, WV man from the wreckage.

Josh Cottrill, who has been living on Frozen Run with his grandfather, reportedly received injuries to his head and other trauma. He was airlifted by HealthNet from the Upper West Fork Park about 2 a.m. to Charleston Area Medical Center.

A passerby discovered the wrecked auto with Cottrill trapped inside shortly before 1 am. Neighbors said they believed the accident might have happened about 11:30 pm.

Sheriff Allen Parsons and Chief Deputy Carl Ballengee investigated the accident. Calhoun EMS dispatched two ambulances and the Upper West Fork VFD dispatched units to the scene, four miles from State Route 16.
