COLD NIGHT PROBLEMS - Hitchhiker Given Some Help, Chimney Catches On Fire

(01/08/2004)
A woman hitch hiking from a western state to Pennsylvania was discovered in the Arnoldsburg coin-operated laundry by owner Billy Houchin last night.

The woman was seeking shelter from the arctic chill hovering over the area.

Houchin, well known for helping people in the community, called for assistance. Deputy Sheriff Charlie Richards and the Victory Baptist Church arranged for an overnight stay at the motel in Arnoldsburg, plus Houchin supplied some extra clothing for the woman.

Another cold night incident, a chimney caught on fire near the top of Big Springs hill before 8 p.m. The Smithville VFD called for assistance from the Grantsville VFD, but both departments returned to station after the owners put out the blaze.
