SUPREME COURT COMMENTS ON GOV. MOORE'S LAW LICENSE

(12/13/2003)
The Supreme Court has released details regarding their ruling announced last week that denies a law license to former Governor Arch Moore.

Moore was disbarred from practicing law after pleading guilty in 1990 to five corruption-related felonies.

He now says the guilty pleas were a mistake and he is innocent of the charges brought against him.

Moore entered into a plea arrangement where numerous other charges were dropped.

The Supreme Court unanimously ruled against Moore getting his law license back. The court said he showed a "shocking disregard for the public trust and for the standards of the legal profession."

Moore evaded taxes, obstructed justice, extorted money and took illegal campaign contributions.

The Supreme Court said that these crimes reveal a willingness to deceive, to conceal the truth and to bend the law for personal and professional gain.

Moore, an 80-year-old Republican, served six terms in Congress and three terms as governor.

He still receives standing ovations at Republican gatherings.
