Transcribed by Norma Knotts Shaffer from microfilm
of the Calhoun Chronicle dated 4/10/1894.
Word reached us a few days ago that White Caps, Redmen Regulators,
Highway
Robbers, Rogues or the Lord knows who, are operating on Beech Fork of
the
West Fork, in this county.
We understand that they said, to a man named Ben Boggs, get thee
out
of this country, and he went. They next called upon Louis Vogt,
and informed him that he to, must take his departure and emphasized
their
instructions by going into his house and breaking a rifle gun and
carrying
away some of the pieces and Vogt said, I will arise and go also.
The good people of that vicinity, and there are many such, ought to
leave no stone unturned to find the guilty parties and see to it, that
they are immediately brought to justice. There can be no safety
for
life or property where such lawlessness is tolerated. Vogts
wife
and boy are already in jail on a serious charge awaiting the action of
the next Grand Jury. If the people of the community above
refered
to, or any number of them, are seeking to rid themselves of the rest
of
the gang, in adopting revolutionary methods, they have made a serious
mistake.
We feel safe in saying, however, that none of the conservative and
thinking
element of the people are accessories to such conduct.
We get our information about the matter from the jailor, and he,
from
the friends of some of the prisoners. We sincerely hope that the
report is false. |
