Truth Is Unchangeable

And ye shall know the truth, and the
truth shall make you free. John 8:32

Two Plus Two. Suppose your first grader brought an arithmetic paper home on which the teacher had marked wrong two plus two equals four. You go to school to talk with the teacher about it and she informs you that that might have been true when you were in school, but in this modern age, in this school the faculty had all agreed that two plus two would equal five.

Man Cannot Change Truth. Truth is unchangeable. We may err from it, deny it, fall away from it, reject it, resist it, but we can never change it. Even if all the presidents and congresses in the world agreed, truth would not be changed one whit.

Man Cannot Formulate Truth. Man cannot form new truth. He can only discover truth that God has designed in the universe. The wise man said it this way: “The thing that hath been, is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.” (Ecclesiastes 1:9). As time passes, we learn new truth. For centuries scientists had differing theories as to what was supporting the earth. In the days of Columbus and Magellen, we discovered the truth that nothing was supporting it. That truth had been in God’s Word all along; “He stretcheth out the north over the empty place and hangeth the earth upon nothing.” (Job 26:7). Man didn’t formulate that truth. He only discovered it.

In The Sciences. In mathematics, two plus two equals four. Two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen makes water. Every seed brings forth after its kind. Those truths are just as constant as the planets in their journey around the sun. They have never changed and never will. We could never change those truths, even if we wanted to.

Religious Truth. Religious truth is just as constant and unchangeable. The Word of God is Truth (John 17:17), and man cannot change it. Man may change, but the Word doesn’t.

“Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times shome shall depart from the faith…” (1 Timothy 4:1). Some shall depart from the faith. Does the faith change?

“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.” (2 Timothy 4:3, 4). Men may turn away their ears from the truth. Does that change the truth?

“Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him…” (James 5:19). Man may err from the truth. Does the truth change? Truth is unchangeable.
