A Faith You Can Trust #1

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for,
the evidence of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1

An Age Of Insecurity. We live in an age of doubt, fear, anxiety, frustration, and uncertainty. We worry about the economy, national security, our health, our parents, our kids, our bills and our ills. If that is not enough, they keep reminding us about the ozone, global warming, the rain forest, and acid rain. Now many are losing their jobs due to downsizing All that in addition to death and taxes.

Religious Insecurity. We need something stable and secure to hold on to in this unstable world. So we turn to religion. But we find religious movements rise and fall. Religious doctrines wax and wane. Religious leaders are often caught up in fraud and deceit. Religious teachings are filled with contradiction and confusion. What are we to do? Who is right? What is Truth? Can we ever really know?

Some Things We Can Know. Even in the midst of all this uncertainty, there are some things we can KNOW:

Jesus taught that we can KNOW TRUTH. “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” John 8:32.

Peter declared that we can KNOW CHRIST: “Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.” Acts 2:36.

Ananias informed Saul that he could KNOW GOD’S WILL: “…the God of our fathers hath chosen thee, that thou shouldest know his will…” Acts 22:14.

Paul said that we can KNOW OUR FUTURE REWARD: “For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.” 2 Corinthians 5:1. These are just a few of the things The Bible says that WE CAN KNOW.

How Can We Know? We know by faith. Faith is evidence. (See our text above). Many people misunderstand what Paul meant when he wrote: For we walk by faith, not by sight.” 2 Corinthians 5:7. Paul is not saying we cannot know what we believe. Seeing is not always believing. Some folks see ghosts in cemeteries at midnight. Some folks on drugs see all sorts of creepy crawly things that aren’t really there. Blind folks can KNOW many things, even though they see nothing. A jury will send a man to prison for life, even though they didn’t see the crime committed. There are many kinds of evidence even more reliable than eye witness. There is much more scientific evidence for the Christian faith, than for the theory of evolution.
