Reach For The Sky #4

Dreams And Visions. Everybody has dreams of what they would like to do or like to be, but not everybody has the vision (foresight), the determination and the discipline to make those dreams a reality. What attitudes or personality traits must one have to be successful in life, to bring those dreams to life? In addition to Self-Acceptance and Self-Confidence, one must have Self-Reliance.

Support Of Others. “Two are better than one…For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.” (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10). We depend so much on the support and encouragement of others. That’s one of the great blessings of Christian fellowship. Paul often felt the need of companionship, especially when he was prisoner in Rome. In his second letter to Timothy, we can almost feel the loneliness in his heart when he wrote: “Do thy diligence to come shortly unto me: For Demas hath forsaken me…Only Luke is with me. Take Mark, and bring him with thee…” (2 Timothy 4:9-11).

Just as the members of our physical bodies support and strengthen one another, so also do we as members of the body of Christ. “Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” (Galatians 6:2). But there are times when we must…

Depend Upon Self. A few verses later Paul wrote: “For every man shall bear his own burden.” (Galatians 6:5). Friends can support, strengthen, and encourage one another in many ways, but there are times when friends are not there, and there are situations in which we must bear the burden alone. Jesus had to face the cross alone. All the disciples forsook him and fled (Matthew 26:56). Paul had to face Caesar alone: “At my first answer no man stood with me, but all men forsook me.” (2 Timothy 4:16).

Anonymous wrote: “Don’t depend too much on anyone in this world. Even your shadow leaves you when you are in darkness.” Friends can provide a shoulder to cry on, or lean on, but you must suffer the pain alone.

Self-Reliance is a good thing. Albert Einstein said: “I’m thankful for all those who said, ‘No!’ Because of them, I did it myself.” Sometimes it’s a blessing to get kicked out of the boat, for then you either sink, or swim. Nobody is as interested in your dreams as you are. They may support and encourage you in many ways, but to be successful…to make your dream a reality, you must rely on self.
