RESPONSE TO "EYES WIDE OPEN FOR LIBERTY" - Comments On Homeland Security

(08/19/2002)

By Bob Weaver

There was considerable response to our comment piece "Homeland Spies May Be Coming - Keep Eyes Wide Open For Liberty" (8/18) ie having meter readers, TV cable employees and others being "trained" to report suspicious things they might see while in citizen's homes.

Among the responders, Larry Taylor:

"I hope everyone reads and thinks about your article on the Homeland spies among us...it's really frightening, that our friends and neighbors may be spying on us, as we invite others into our homes...this can start out as a guise against terrorism, but can, and in the past, has led to losing more of our freedoms and libertys..."

Taylor offered the following historical warning:

"The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been two hundred years, with a progression through the following sequence. From bondage to spiritual faith; from spiritual faith to great courage; from great courage to liberty; from liberty to great abundance; from great abundance to complacency; from complacency to apathy; from apathy to dependence.

And finally, from dependence, back into bondage.

Other readers said:

"We must be vigilant with our government, just as much as our enemies."

"I really believe we are losing our liberties by standing by and watching our government, and certainly by not voting."

"Have most Americans forgot what we are based upon?"

"Much of the Homeland Security stuff will have little to do with combating terrorism."

Thanks for your comments.
