THE FROG POND - Happy Mothers Day

(05/09/2002)

By Susan Mazer Stewart

To the mothers counting the days, the stretch marks, the contractions, decorating the nursery and collecting tiny little clothes, agonizing over which kind of car seat to buy. And to those who already have.

To the mothers filling their days with 2 am feedings, spit up stains, endless diaper changes, teething, colic and endless lullabies. And to those who already have.

To the mothers who watch Sesame Street, Teletubbies, Winnie the Pooh, and Blue's Clues while picking Cheerios out of the carpet and a little one's hair, who endure potty training and temper tantrums. And to those who already have.

To the mothers experiencing the heartaches and triumphs of the first day of school, lost lunch boxes, buying 4 pairs of mittens so little hands will have at least one unmatched pair come the end of Winter. Who cover their refrigerators in so much art work, the original color can't be seen. And to those who already have.

To the mothers who pencil in soccer practice, dance class, birthday parties, family dinners, committee meetings, scouts, and church functions. Who drive 500 miles in one week toting carloads of kids, and do it all while listening to "the hottest thing ever" on the radio. And to those who already have.

To the mothers who faithfully attend the dance recitals, the big games, the PTO meetings, the science fairs, the spelling bees, the Christmas pageants, and the school programs, always ready with a smile of congratulations or a hug of condolences. And to those who already have.

To the mothers whose hearts sink after loaning out their car keys and hearing it drive away, who stay up until the footsteps cross the doorway, only to pretend to have fallen asleep. Who help shop for the prom and pack for "the big move." Who wave proudly, fighting tears, when another car pulls away. And to those who already have.

To the mothers who dance at weddings, prepare family dinners only on Sundays and holidays, who rock grand babies to sleep, and sing endless lullabies. And to those who already have.
