Calhoun Soldier's Remains Returned in 1949

Pvt. D.R. Cross Funeral Sunday

Services for Pvt. Delbert Richard Cross, 19, son of Mrs. Cora Richard Cross and the late Arlis Cross of Grantsville who was killed on Okinawa, May 1, 1945, were held Sunday at 11 a.m. from the Hardman Chapel Church.  The Rev. M.E. Burns officiated and interment was in the Butcher cemetery near Weston.

His body was returned Thursday evening to the Stump funeral home of Grantsville.  Pvt. Cross has been in service 15 months.  He was sent overseas in 1944 and was stationed at Hawaii, the Philippines and at Okinawa.

He was born February 28, 1926 at Weston.  Surviving in addition to his mother are three sisters, Mrs. Kathleen Betts, Miss Christine Cross and Miss Louverne Cross all at home; and five brothers, Worthy A., Edmon L. and Robert C., all serving in the U.S. Navy at present, Glen Cross of Grantsville and Don Cross of Parkersburg.
