Red Men on the Warpath!
Rev. Scott Williams and Wesley and Albert Poling Severely Whipped
Not for many years, since the days of the "Ku Klux Klan" the "Red men"
and the "White Caps" have the people of our county been stirred up as they
have in the past week over the raid of a bunch of masked men, who formed
in a well ordered mob and visited the home of Rev. Scott Williams, Sanctified,
or Holiness, preacher, on Sand Ridge, between Arnoldsburg and Stumptown,
last Monday night where they proceeded to administer a severe dose of "hickory
tea" to the aforesaid Rev. Williams. He was severely whipped, five
members of the gang giving him five licks each, and many lacerations were
made on his body.
Wesley Poling, an aged and highly respected citizen, and his son, Albert,
who is also a first class citizen, were attracted to the scene of the whipping
by the noise made by the mob, and implored the maskers to desist in the
cruel designs, but they were of the same faith as the preacher and were
given the same dose as he.
Public sentiment is strong against such indignities; and an investigation
was at once started by the grand jury, with what results can best be judged
by a look at the indictments published elsewhere in this issue. There
were thirteen men indicted but this is not more than a third or fourth
the number of men that comprised the mob. And whether any of those
indicted are guilty remains yet to be proven. The investigation will
be continued, however and it is hoped that every man who participated will
be shown as little mercy as they showed their victims.
