DR. CANADY WILL PRESENT AT TEACHER'S WORKSHOP - Challenges Current Grading System

(08/02/2005)

Calhoun school administrator Greg Cartwright told Board of Education members last night that Calhoun teachers will be attending a professional development workshop prior to school commencing.

Among the outstanding presenters for the workshop is well-known educator Dr. Lynn Canady, Professor Emeritus of the University of Virginia, who challenges the prevalent grading systems.

"He will rattle your cage about being average and the power of zero," said Cartwright.

Canady says the current grading system allows teachers to use zeros as the ultimate grading weapon. Developing a responsible grading system without the use of zeros requires thoughtful and deliberate decisions about the purpose and manner of grading, he says.

Dr. Dianne Briars of Pittsburgh Public Schools will present a workshop on standard based mathematics instruction.

Other presenters include author David Pelzer of Glenville State College, Bill Ellis of Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center, Liza Youell of WVDE and Carl Williamson of WVDE.

"We are very fortunate to have these individuals at our workshop," said Cartwright.

Cartwright said he and local teacher Vickie Baker will be presenting an algebra teaching model to a meeting of the WV Association of School Administrators.
