A Normantown area man has been recognized by Glenville State College. James D.
"Jim" Shock, a 1991 graduate of GSC, has been named the recipient of the
Outstanding Young Alumnus Award. This award is presented to a graduate who is less
than 36 years of age who has achieved early and remarkable success in their
career.
Shock earned a master's degree in communication at WVU in 1995. After a short stint
as a community college teacher, he located in Orlando, Florida and was hired as a
marketing writer for Disney. He became one of two speech writers for the president of
Walt Disney World Resort.
In 1997 he wrote an original story "The Day Before the Night Before Christmas," which
was published in a collection called "Christmas with Kathie Lee." In 1999 he was
promoted to head writer at Walt Disney Entertainment, where he works with five other
writers, currently developing "Who Wants to be a Millionaire - Play It!", which will
become an attraction to open at the Disney-MGM theme park in 2001.
Shock credits his mother, Greta, for his success, and gives special credit to such
people as Yvonne King, Delores Mysliwiee, Chris Orr, Bobbi Nicholson and Ed McKown
for their "special seeds on inspiration."
