DECISIONS - PICK UP MILK AFTER YOU GAS YOUR CAR - Or Buy Milk And Put Gas In Your Car

(04/15/2004)

If gasoline hitting $2 a gallon isn't enough, now comes a whooping increase in milk prices.

Milk is expected to increase 50 cents a gallon starting next month.

Gary Deeds of Summers County runs West Virginia's largest dairy farm with 425 milk cows. He says that for every $1 shoppers spend on milk, farmers -- "who do all the work and take all the risks" -- receive just 30 cents.

He said dairy farmers have been getting prices less than they were 25 years ago, expressing hope the farmers will now get a better share.

The average cost for a gallon of milk will likely be about $3.50.

Other dairy products are expected to increase.
