If form follows function Calhoun should have two individual champions … and Oak Glen will win another Class AA-A state championship.

“I am afraid the race is for second,” Calhoun coach Mike Stump said. “Oak Glen advanced all its team to the tournament and it is hard to beat those numbers.”

Oak Glen has been a terror since it dropped from Class AAA a few years back and has been the team to beat in Class AA-A since then … and it has not been beaten.

So the state tournament is as much a coronation of Oak Glen as anything else.

On the other hand Calhoun has a real good shot at second place and as good a shot as anyone to breaking the Golden Bears stranglehold on the top spot. As a matter of fact the Red Devils gave Oak Glen its toughest fight ever a couple of years ago when it finished second a mere 19 points behind the Golden Bears.

For one thing the Red Devils have two wrestlers that would have to be favored in their weight class … at least based on the latest poll.

Justin Ashley, who has a 38-1 record, is top-ranked in the Class AA-A 130-pound division. His toughest competition may come in the semifinals of the upper bracket when he should face Jesse Mahan of Oak Glen. The winner of that will advance to the championship match.

Eric Metz is a perfect 41-0 at 152 pounds and is the top-ranked wrestler in the state. He should advance to the finals where he will face the second-ranked wrestler, Rhett Northcraft of Oak Glen.

Metz and Ashley are regional champions as are two other Red Devil wrestlers – Andrew Cummings (135) and Paul Goodrich (160). Both Cummings and Goodrich are fourth-ranked in the state.

Calhoun’s other wrestlers at the state tournament include Eddie Burrows (112), Jaron Sampson (119), Justin Ramsey (125) and Justin Price (140). Of those Price is ranked the highest at number five. Sampson is sixth-ranked while Burrows and Ramsey are ranked number seven.

Calhoun’s wrestlers and first round opponent:

Eddie Burrows (25-11) versus Tim Cumpston (25-8) of Cameron.

Jaron Sampson (26-11) versus Brandon Smith (12-10) of Bridgeport.

Justin Ramsey (34-13) versus Derek Scarbro (24-1) of Shady Spring.

Justin Ashley (38-1) versus Brandon Antill (17-14) of Cameron.

Andrew Cummings (34-5) versus Jedd Guthrie (25-13) of Grafton.

Justin Price (28-12) versus Andrew Lester (24-12) of Shady Spring.

Eric Metz (41-0) versus Dustin Miller (31-8) of Wirt.

Paul Goodrich (38-3) versus Levi Wood (14-11) of Independence.

Wrestling gets under way tonight at 6:30 and continues through Saturday night.
