Another Braxton Pizza Hut Big 16 … another championship for Calhoun.

But this one is a little different. This one the Red Devils dominated, beating runner-up Shady Spring by 64 points – 225-161. Braxton County was half a point behind Shady Spring in the two-day tournament held this weekend at the Braxton County Armory.

The Red Devils got individual titles from Justin Ashley (130); Andrew Cummings (135), Eric Metz (152) and Paul Goodrich (160) while adding a second place finish by Bryan Gungle (98).

Calhoun had a slim eight point lead – 97-89 over Herbert Hoover – after the first day of the tournament but made a big splash the second day when it rolled up 128 additional points on the strength of the four champions.

In the championship round Ashley beat James Adams of Braxton County to claim the 130-pound title. That was followed by Cummings’ victory over highly regarded Justin Chapman of Shady Spring. Metz and Goodrich beat wrestlers they had beaten earlier in the season. Metz decisioned Kevin Efaw of Grafton while Goodrich topped Andrew Branard of Roane County.

Gungle dropped a decision to Independence standout Robert Rash.

Herbert Hoover was fourth in the tournament followed by Roane, Greenbrier West, Bridgeport, Grafton and Winfield. Nicholas County rounds out the top 10.

Calhoun is idle until Friday when it plays host to Woodrow Wilson of Washington, D.C., in a match that is scheduled to be held before the student body. Then on Saturday Calhoun is host for the Calhoun Invitational.
