The Braxton Pizza Hut Big 16 Tournament is generally considered the halfway point of the season. It is also considered a
barometer for the rest of the season, especially for AA-A teams.
It will be a barometer for Calhoun County’s wrestling team – even more of a barometer for the Red Devils since they are the
defending champion. Last year Calhoun won three individual titles while beating runnerup Independence by 42 points – 212-170.
Two of three Red Devils titlists return. Justin Ashley won the title last year at 119 and is wrestling at 130 this season. Eric Metz
won at 145 and will be at 152 this season. Metz is undefeated on the season at 22-0.
Calhoun’s starting lineup should include:
103 – Eddie Burrows; 112 – Bryan Gungle; 119 – Jaron Sampson; 125 – Justin Ramsey; 130 – Justin Ashley; 135 – Andrew
Cummings; 140 – Dustin Price; 145 – Dustyn Nichols; 152 – Eric Metz; 160 – Paul Goodrich; 171 – Dustin Carpenter; 189 –
Michael Roberts; 215 or UNL – Dustin Whipkey.
Teams in the tournament besides Calhoun include: Braxton County; Bridgeport: Clay County; Fayetteville; Frankfort; Grafton;
Greenbrier West; Herbert Hoover; Independence; Liberty Raleigh; Midland Trail; Nicholas County; Petersburg; Ravenswood;
Richwood; Roane County; Shady Spring; South Harrison; St. Albans; Webster County and Winfield.
Following this weekend’s two-day event the Red Devils will hold a dual match against Woodrow Wilson High School of Washington,
D.C., on Friday before hosting the Calhoun Invitational Saturday.
