When they were playing middle school ball they never lost a game. It was assumed that great things would follow this fabulous group … state titles and top rankings sort of things.

It hasn’t quite happened that way until this year. This year the members of that undefeated middle school team are seniors and are ranked number one in the state.

The top-ranked Gilmer Titans, 9-1, will invade Calhoun County High School tonight to face its top nemesis in a big league LKC Southern Division showdown.

Four of the Fab Five for the middle school are still at it and are in the starting lineup for the Titans.

The leader of that group is 6-2 senior Nick Dent. Dent is averaging about 27 points a game and is being touted as a Division I prospect. He is joined by three other Fab Five members including Anthony Reale, Jacob Lilly and 6-8 Seth Butler. The fifth member of the Fab Five, Robbie Huffman, suffered a knee injury as has not played basketball at the high school level.

Gilmer County’s other starter is Aaron Bishop while Richard Ratliff sees considerable time off the bench.

Thus far this season the only loss suffered by the Titans came at the hand of Stafford County, Va., in the Mount Hope Classic.

Calhoun County, however, has been the biggest thorn in the side of the Titans since, well, middle school days.

Although Gilmer County won all of its middle school games some of the battles with Calhoun County were the stuff of legend, including a couple of classics during the Fab Five’s eighth grade year.

Calhoun comes into the game with a 5-2 record and its back against the wall in the LKC South Division because of a season-opening loss to Roane County. Thus far Gilmer has no LKC blemishes and Calhoun has one meaning, the Red Devils will have to sweep the Titans to beat the Titans.

Calhoun is led by Marcus Davis, who is averaging 24.8 points a game. Jake Perkins, Tristan Harris, Zach Houchin and Mike Batten will join him in the starting lineup. The Red Devils will also depend on its bench during the game including Ryan ‘Goob’ Fitzwater, Shawn Hillegas, Tommy Gerwig, Derek Roberts and Chad Conley.

Following tonight’s game the Red Devils will travel to Clay County Wednesday night and then to Braxton County Friday night.
