For one team it is a matter of proving a season-opening loss was a fluke, for the other it is a matter of finding out exactly where it
It is going to be that kind of weekend.
The Calhoun County basketball team will travel to Roane. The wrestling team will be in the always tough Nitro Invitational.
"We’d like to have that one back," Calhoun coach Tim Davis said of the Red Devils’ 53-49 loss to the Raiders in the season opener.
Tonight his team gets its chance at redemption.
Calhoun goes into the game with a 4-2 record while Roane is 3-4. Both are coming off big Wednesday night wins: Calhoun rather
easily over Wirt and Roane over Ritchie.
Calhoun is being led in scoring by Marcus Davis, who is averaging 24 points a game. In the season opening loss to the Raiders he
was held to a season-low 14 points which included an 0-7 night from three-point land. Overall he was 4-18 in the game, by far his
worst shooting night of the season.
Zach Houchin is the floor leader and is leading the LKC in assists. He had eight in the Red Devils’ 76-35 romp over Wirt. Jake
Perkins is also an LKC leader as the top rebounder. Davis’ 24.0 incidentally is second in the LKC behind Nick Dent of Gilmer, who
is averaging 27.3.
Calhoun’s other starters will be Tristan Harris and Mike Batten.
In the season opening loss Calhoun went with an iron-man rotation playing only five players the entire game. Since then several key
reserves have stepped up including Derek Roberts, Shawn Hillegas, Chad Conley, Ryan ‘Goob’ Fitzwater and Tommy Gerwig.
Following tonight’s game the Red Devils are idle until Jan. 16 when archrival Gilmer County invades.
The wrestling team will be at what coach Mike Stump feels in the barometer for the remainder of the season.
And the two-day affair will be a tough one since the field includes Buckhannon-Upshur, Cabell Midland, Chesapeake Ohio, Clay
County, East Fairmont, George Washington, Huntington, Hurricane, Lewis County, Logan, Nicholas County, Nitro, North Marion,
Point Pleasant, RC Byrd, Riverside, Shady Springs, Sheldon Clarke Ky., Sissonville, Spring Valley, Winfield, Wirt County,
Woodrow Wilson and Calhoun.
Wrestling starts at 1 p.m. today and 10 a.m. Saturday:
Calhoun has two unbeaten wrestlers – both 18-0 – in Justin Ashley at 130 and Eric Metz at 152.
Calhoun’s probable starting lineup includes:
