Calhoun Schools took a serious plunge in enrollment numbers during the 2012-13 year, dropping 54 students, preceded by a couple years of slight increases, mostly due to early childhood education.

This 2013-14 year, according to Superintendent of Schools Roger Propst, the enrollment numbers are up 11 from last year.

Calhoun Schools has lost about 625 students since the early 1990s.

The official current number will not be confirmed until October, a report that will show in what schools and grades enrollment declined, how many students transferred to other schools and how many are being home-schooled.

The decline of 54 students in 2012-13 meant a loss of about a half-million dollars, translated into a funding loss for teachers and service personnel.

Sparsely populated rural systems, particularly those without educational levies, continue to suffer with the state's long-time school funding formula, although a few slight adjustments have been made in recent years to the formula.

The biggest single loss for Calhoun Schools was in 2000-01 with -112.
