| The Golden Horseshoe Test has been administered in West Virginia each year since 1931 and is the longest running program of its kind in the United States.
The exam tests student knowledge on West Virginia citizenship, civics and government, economics, geography, history and current events.
The award takes its name from early in the days of Virginia's colonial timr. Then Gov. Alexander Spotswood saw the need for westward expansion across the Allegheny Mountains.
When the explorers returned from their sojourn across most of what is now West Virginia, Spotswood presented them each with a golden horseshoe inscribed with a Latin phrase that translates to "Thus he swears to cross the mountains."
Well over 250 Calhoun students have received the Golden Horseshoe. The list will likely spur memories of some of them:
